The photobook “Jomin” brings together two photographic series. First, Yasuo Higa captures life on the Ryukyu islands through anonymous portraits of their inhabitants. Through the faces, the tattoos, the clothes and the surroundings of their subjects, Higa's black-and-white portraits tell us of the diversity and culture on the Ryukyu islands. The second series, “War Widows”, draws a direct line from the past to the present: Higa took portraits of widowed women with portrait photographs of their deceased husbands, all of whom died during the Second World War. Husbands, captured in eternal youth, in the arms of their aging wives.
