"This is a collection of photos taken on a journey to 86 old-style barbershops on a 500-kilometer walk between May 2012 and December 2014 along Route 1 – the Tokaido route that links the Japanese cities of Tokyo and Kyoto. All possess a unique style and character, each steeped in its owner's personality - more like mini-kingdoms than places of business. Not long after completing this collection, I learned that four of the barbershops had closed and been. torn down – a sign of the changing times. I hope that these photos serve as more than a mere record of my journey along Route 1." artist statement
