Hibi literally comprises a series of street photographs by renowned Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase. Each of the black and white images painstakingly attends to the road surface—the worn road markings, the faded lines and arrows eroded by the city's countless inhabitants, a network of cracks in the asphalt. In 1992, Fukase printed and painted the works for a solo exhibition, 'Private Scenes '92,' held at the Nikon Salon in Tokyo. He layered a set of bromide prints with fluid drawings in vibrantly colored inks, and over each image the artist's physical presence is traced, a shadowy presence that seems to offer a reading, an interpretation, but can never be entirely resolved.
