Gift, the first book by Mari Katayama (born 1987 in Gunma, Japan), is a retrospective of her work and development as an artist. Born with only two fingers on her left hand and tibial hemimelia, a rare defect in which a leg bone is missing, Katayama had both legs amputated at the age of nine. Since then, she has transcended this situation through works she creates with her prosthetics, embroidered objects, and self-portraits, using her own body as a living sculpture.
With a text by Simon Baker, director of the Maison européenne de la photographie in Paris, Gift was published in conjunction with Katayama's first solo exhibition in Europe, at the White Rainbow Gallery (47 Mortimer Street, London) between 24 January and 2 March 2019.
