Quiulacocha is a visual project that uses photographic alchemy as a metaphor for the impact of mining on the health of the residents of Cerro de Pasco, a town in the central Andes of Peru. Photographer Marco Garro collected samples of mine tailings dumped into what was once Lake Quiulacocha, to use in developing the photographs. The toxic liquid leaves marks and textures on the photographs that mimic the way contamination marks life and the environment. “I wanted to ‘reveal’ the corrosive effects of mining on health and the environment, which we often prefer not to see,” explains the author.
