Without exception, the unusual photographs of Ingar Krauss (*1965 in Berlin) are portraits of children and adolescents in faded gray and sepia tones. The subjects look serious, proud, unapproachable, distant, and sometimes defiant—like children, yet too mature for their age. The photographer often finds his models at home or during his travels in children's institutions typical of the former Eastern Bloc countries: summer camps, socialist Young Pioneer clubs, and orphanages. Krauss prints his portraits in black and white on old photographic paper produced in Eastern Europe, which gives his pictures a timeless and melancholic tone.
