Located between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, the Aral Sea has been evaporating inexorably since the 1960s, as a result of the Soviet plan to irrigate cotton fields, whose intensive cultivation has caused an unprecedented ecological and climatic disaster. The inland sea has lost 90% of its original surface. The completion of the Kokaral dam in 2005 has allowed the return of the sea and fish in the northern part but definitively condemns the southern part, doomed to disappear.
