“Shimakage literally translates to ‘island shadow.’ This book brings together various images captured in the islands and surrounding coastal areas of Japan. They are the result of an ancient retouching technique known as ‘zokin-gake,’ which was popular among amateur photographers in Japan in the 1920s and 1930s. The result is images that beautifully evoke a faded memory, with the landscapes appearing and disappearing in the image from the photographer’s memory, standing as faint silhouettes against the backdrop of a darkened memory.” Text by Benrido.
