In parallel with the Rencontres de la photographie d'Arles and in the continuity of its artistic direction, Echo 119 is proud to highlight Japanese women through the work of several Japanese photographers and one French woman, this summer at the Galerie Huit Arles, from July 1 to July 31.

Throughout the month of July, the beautiful private mansion of Galerie Huit will serve as a showcase for six Japanese artists from different generations. Although some are little (re)known, their photographic practices have contributed to the influence of Japanese photography and bear witness to the richness of female photographic practice in the archipelago.

Since its creation 8 years ago, Écho 119 has worked to support, represent and showcase these women photographers, like Sakiko Nomura, Tokyo Rumando, Chieko Shiraishi, Hitomi Watanabe and others, and to give them the place they deserve in the landscape of Japanese photography, still very (too) driven, in representation in galleries and institutions, by the big male names who regularly return. In Arles, this selection will be enriched by other guest photographers, thus creating a broader vision of this active contemporary Japanese female scene. To complete this picture, the gallery will present the work of French photographer Chloé Jafé, who has, in a unique work, highlighted the intimate daily lives of Japanese women – those of the yakuza universe, for seven years.

Schedules

Galerie Huit is open every day of the professional opening week (July 1st to 7th) from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 7pm and the rest of the month from Monday to Saturday from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 7pm and Sunday from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm, as well as by appointment.
