PhotoLondon : Objects of Intimacy

PhotoLondon: Objects of Intimacy

We are pleased to announce our presence, for the second year, at Photo London, which will take place from May 16 to 19, 2024. We will present works by Sakiko Nomura, Tokyo Rumando and Chieko Shiraishi, Chloé Jafé and Virginie Blajberg around the theme “Objects of intimacy”.
About the exhibited artists:

Sakiko Nomura explores intimacy in Japanese culture through her photography. In her series “Another Black Darkness” (2009, Japan), she solarizes images to obscure the intimate, inviting contemplation and imagination of what remains hidden. Nomura’s work embraces mystery, inviting viewers to feel rather than articulate the emotions conveyed by light and images.
Tokyo Rumando uses self-portraiture to explore and (re)find her image in the face of male gaze. Through bold stagings, she questions identity norms, continually reinventing herself. In her ongoing series "Visible/Invisible Memories", she explores the notion of memory, subtly intertwining elaborate self-portraits with fragments of reality, weaving a web of intimate memories, from childhood to more recent events.
Chieko Shiraishi explores intimacy through memory, probing the fleetingness of time and moments. For this ongoing series, she creates small albumen prints, capturing the small details and wonders that have caught her eye during her many travels and in her daily life. She thus forms her intimate collection, her own cabinet of curiosities.
French artist Chloé Jafé combines art and documentary, delving into deeply intimate themes. In her series "I Give You My Life" (2013-2019, Japan), she delves into the world of yakuza women in Tokyo. Her photographic exploration sheds light on these women who live on the fringes of Japanese society. Jafé dares to push the boundaries of traditional photography by directly manipulating her prints with acrylics and brushes.
Virginie Blajberg combines photography and jewelry to create small objects that materialize her intimate memories. By transforming family archive photos into jewelry, she reinvents these memories, immortalizing them in a new way. Her creations, both works of art and wearable jewelry, allow us to reinterpret the history of family images, witnesses to both her personal history and universal family ties.
