Herbie Yamaguchi “You can click away from whatever you want. That's punk Published by Super Labo & Galerie &co 119, 2017 Book size 23 x 22 x 0.6 cm Softcover First edition ISBN 978-4-908512-05-6 Published on the occasion of the exhibition “You can click away from whatever you want. That's punk » at the gallery &co 119 from May 16 (opening) to July 8 2017 Born in 1950, Herbie Yamaguchi suffered from spinal caries and spent most of his childhood in corset, which fortunately led him to the photo club in school where he found his lifelong passion. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics before he left home for London in 1973, where he stayed for the next decade. In London, he joined the musical company “Red Buddha” led by Tsutomu Yamashita and performed on stage as an actor for a while. Soon he started to capture the days with his camera and kept a lively record of the developing subculture movements, especially the punk scene in the 70's London as he was inspired by his own experiences. Among his early works, his photographs of punk rock musicians such as Joe Strummer (The Clash) received high recognition. Once returned home to Tokyo, he kept visiting Europe to photograph hundreds of people, from artists to everyday people, which eventually became his precious collections of monochrome. His style is well-known for its delicacy and naturalness. Today he is one of the most celebrated photographers who have fans and admirers all over the world. His enthusiasm is not limited to photo collections and exhibitions: he also writes for magazines and appears on TV and radio. He is a visiting professor at Kyushu Sangyo University and Osaka University of Arts. ----------- Published on the occasion of the exhibition “You can click away from whatever you want. That's punk” at the &co119 gallery, from May 16 to July 8, 2017. Herbie Yamaguchi was living in London when the Punk movement was born. He says he felt a new wind blowing, especially in Music and Fashion. Young people with Mohican crests and leather jackets quickly became favorite subjects for Herbie, a young photographer in the making and in search of subjects. Then in the process, the New Wave and New Romantic movements were born, which would allow Herbie to go further in his photographic approach...
