“Daido Moriyama in São Paulo & Miguel Rio Branco in Tokyo” is a collaborative work between Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama and Brazilian photographer Miguel Rio Branco, a member of Magnum Photo. This project emerged as part of the exhibition “Neo-Tropicalia: The Creativity of Brazil” at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2008, commemorating the 100th anniversary of immigration to Brazil. As part of this initiative, a photographic exchange between Japan and Brazil was undertaken, resulting in the photo exhibition “Silent Gazes in Resonance.” Moriyama and Blanco captured Buenos Aires and Tokyo, respectively, in a kind of cultural exchange similar to a study abroad program. This book, composed of two volumes with accompanying texts, presents their distinct photographic collections. While Moriyama’s focus is on the city’s inhabitants, Blanco explores intricate details and textures, creating a sculptural narrative. Despite their different approaches, both photographers demonstrate a keen sensitivity in depicting the essence of their respective urban landscapes.
