That a woman is the subject of this book is hardly surprising, as Sawatari Hajime became a mythical portraitist by photographing female models. What is striking, however, is the unexplained and strangely appropriate presence of this octopus throughout the book. More than simply inserting an ancillary object into the frame, the photographer bridges the gap between sexuality and animality, creating a unique atmosphere with soft black-and-white portraits that in no way detract from the wildness of the poses.

Published as part of the photobook series Hysteric published by Hysteric Glamour, Hajime Sawatari's Histeric ten is the tenth edition to the sixteen photobooks produced by Hysteric Glamor founder Nobuhiko Kitamura. The series includes published works by photographers such as Daido Moriyama, Terry Richardson, Masahisa Fukase and Cindy Sherman. Hysteric ten brings brings together Hajime Sawatari's photographic series focused on the erotic theme of Shunga.
