Fan Ho was born in Shanghai, China, in 1931. At the age of 13, his father gave him a Rolleiflex, and he was immediately captivated. Right from the start, he showed an innate sense of light and dramatic framing that are the hallmarks of his images today. As a teenager, Fan Ho immigrated to Hong Kong. There, he began documenting daily life in the bustling city, from crowded markets to lonely alleyways. Over the following decades, Fan Ho exhibited his photographs at international fairs, exhibitions and festivals, winning nearly 300 awards.
