The island is remote in the Mediterranean Sea and measures 675 meters above sea level. It is inhabited by an uncertain number of 30 to 60 people year-round, with no hospital, car, priest, or police. Some islanders never considered leaving, while others tried but returned to their lives in this isolated bubble. There are untold stories, complex family trees, and historical legends surrounding the community living on bread laced with hallucinogens.
Bound by an “unconventional” book structure, Thinking Like an Island reflects on a geographical, social, and temporal space, a system and its shifting logic. Eschewing the typical representation of an island as utopia or dystopia, this work examines the ongoing process of identity construction: shock and coexistence, choice and confinement, innovation and resistance. The experience proves layered, plural, and dense; a vertigo of increasing complexity.
