Located between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, the Aral Sea has been inexorably evaporating since the 1960s, a consequence of the Soviet plan to irrigate cotton fields, whose intensive cultivation caused an unprecedented ecological and climatic disaster. The inland sea has lost 90% of its original surface area. The completion of the Kokaral Dam in 2005 allowed the return of the sea and fish to the northern part but definitively condemned the southern part, doomed to disappear.
