"When Nobuyoshi Araki chose the title "Kukei - skypscapes" for his first exhibition after the death of his wife six months earlier, he was referring partly to "heavenly landscapes".(Ku-Kei) - the central theme of the works on show; but at the same time the title also evokes the idea of an "empty landscape (in Japanese 'ku' also means a hollow, a void, an expanse, something that has neither foundation nor substance, in other words, nothingness). Moreover Araki's "kukei" also sounds and looks exactly like the word "kukei" which means "empty marriagened".
