Presenting the first book of Mari Katayama (b. 1987, Gunma, Japan), Gift is a retrospective of her past works and evolution as an artist. Born with only two fingers on her left hand and tibial hemimelia, a rare deficiency in which one leg bone is absent, Katayama amputated both her legs at the age of nine, and has since then transcended her condition by works she creates with her prosthetics, intricately embroidered objects and also self-portrait photography, using her own body as a living sculpture.

With text contribution by Simon Baker, director of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, Gift will be published concurrently with Katayama's first solo exhibition in Europe, at the White Rainbow Gallery (47 Mortimer Street, London) between 24 January – 2 March, 2019.

Gift, the first book by Mari Katayama (born 1987 in Gunma, Japan), is a retrospective of her work and her evolution as an artist. Born with only two fingers on her left hand and tibial hemimelia, a rare defect in which a leg bone is missing, Katayama had both legs amputated at the age of nine. Since then, she has transcended this situation through works she creates with her prosthetics, embroidered objects, and self-portraits, using her own body as a living sculpture.

With a text by Simon Baker, director of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, Gift was published alongside Katayama’s first solo exhibition in Europe, at the White Rainbow Gallery (47 Mortimer Street, London) between 24 January and 2 March 2019.
