ON THE SHORE OF A VANISHING ISLAND - DAESUNG LEE
07.09,2022 - 22.10,2022
OPENING 07.09,2022 / 6-9PM

From September 7th to October 22nd, we present the series On the Shore of a Vanishing Island by Korean photographer Daesung Lee. A committed photographer, this series is the first chapter of a three-part opus on the effects of global warming. In 2017, we exhibited his chapter on desertification in Mongolia, Futuristic Archaeology. On the Shore of a Vanishing Island presents photographs taken on the island of Ghoramara, in India, which is disappearing as sea levels rise.

Lee has witnessed the disappearance of the island and, with it, the past of its inhabitants. The continuous retreat of the shoreline and the disappearance of vegetation leave behind a coast of sediments of a beauty that contrasts with the increasingly bare shores. Daesung Lee captures the last traces of the island and its people, thus leaving a legacy that can be passed on to future generations, from Ghoramara or elsewhere.

On the Shore of a Vanishing Island is a series by Korean photographer Daesung Lee. It presents photographs taken on Ghoramara Island, which is soon-to-disapear under the rising tides. Lee's photographs show us how global warming is already impacting human lives. The continually receding shore and vanishing vegetation leave behind a coast of sediment holding an ironic beauty of its own amid the increasingly barren shores.

By juxtaposing the portraits with the landscapes of the vanishing island, Lee creates unrealistic pictures that pay a gentle tribute to the people and the land.
