FUTURISTIC ARCHAEOLOGY_DAESUNG LEE

23.05.2019 - 13.07.2019

The Gallery is pleased to present its upcoming exhibition, Futuristic Archaeology by Daesung Lee, which will run from May 23 to July 13, 2019.

Today more than ever, as California burns and the permafrost melts like ice in the sun, it seems necessary to trigger a collective awareness of ecological issues and to visualize anticipatory scenarios. This is in any case the challenge that South Korean photographer Daesung Lee has set himself.

Futuristic Archaeology tells us about Mongolia. Or rather, about desertification in Mongolia. Nomadism has been at the heart of the country's culture for centuries. Despite increased urbanization in recent years, 35% of the population is still nomadic and therefore depends on the vast pastures, lakes and rivers that cross Mongolia. However, this way of life is increasingly threatened by desertification and the advance of the Gobi Desert.

If Lee aims to alert, his images are not there to make a judgment. They question, call for reflection and conclusions from each person. They inform of changes – of ecosystems certainly, of traditions, customs and ways of life that depend on a very particular environment above all.

Resorting to fiction when photojournalistic imagery no longer seems sufficient to talk about the issues: this is the weapon chosen by Daesung Lee to better question, question and talk about anthropocentrism.

Daesung Lee was among the winners of the Sony World Photography Awards in 2013 and 2015. He won the Lens Culture Portrait Award in 2015 and the Voies-off Award in 2016. In 2014, he was named Environmental Photographer of the Year in London. In 2016, he was nominated for the Prix Pictet.
