Tokyo Travel Diaries
From September 14 to October 28, 2023, we are delighted to present the group exhibition Carnets de voyages tokyoïtes , with: Roberto Badin, Greg Girard, Bruno Labarbère, Miguel Leache and Michel Vermare.
Combining photographic books and prints, the exhibition offers to discover the Japanese capital and its inhabitants through the eyes of several non-Japanese photographers. What caught the eye of these photographers? What trace did they want to keep of their passages in the city? How to tell this sprawling Tokyo with a thousand facets and their discovery of a new city, a new culture?
Where one was moved by the sleepy passengers of the subway, others have tirelessly walked the streets of the city to discover, some a peaceful Tokyo, others a retro-futuristic and graphic Tokyo, while still others have scoured the nights in search of a Lost in Translation intoxication. By then bringing together these photographs in a book – the preferred medium for the dissemination of Japanese photography –, by selecting them, by choosing a sequence, each photographer constructs a story of his own and shares with the viewers his own travel diary, his own narration of his experience, thus affirming his singular view of the city.
In order to open a broader conversation about Tokyo and the narration of this mythical city through the photographic book, we have chosen to also include books by Japanese photographers in the exhibition, since Tokyo inspires its visitors as much as its inhabitants.

This exhibition, which includes photographic books and prints, invites visitors to discover the Japanese capital and its inhabitants through the eyes of several photographers. What caught the eye of these photographers? What did they want to keep as a record of their visit to the city? How do you tell the story of this sprawling, multi-faceted Tokyo and their discovery of a new city, a new culture?

By gathering these photographs in a book – the traditionally preferred medium in Japanese photography – by selecting them and choosing a sequence, each photographer constructs one's own narrative, sharing with viewers their own travel diary, their own account of the experience, and by doing so, asserts a personal and unique view of the city.
In order to offer a wider conversation about Tokyo and the narrative of this mythical city through the photographic book, we have also chosen to include books by Japanese photographers, since Tokyo inspires both its visitors and its inhabitants.
