TONI CATANY

Self-taught, Toni Catany is a Spanish photographer born in Llucmajor in 1942. Since 1979, he has been internationally known with his photographic work based on the principle of the calotype. Toni developed and perfected his artistic singularity in the 1980s by merging his emotions and enchantments with the subtle language of flowers. The end of the Franco dictatorship (1975) and the crumbling of censorship allowed Catany to emancipate himself: he then integrated suggestive male nudes into his creative universe. From 1994, the Spaniard also produced portraits with Polacolor 809 film, which he then transferred during printing onto 100% cotton paper.

More than 120 solo exhibitions bear witness to the photographer's expertise and aesthetic palette. In Barcelona, in 2000, there was a large retrospective at the National Art Museum of Catalonia. Many books have been published, and many have won awards. Named Chevalier des Arts et Lettres in France in 1991, Toni Catany received the National Photography Prize in Spain ten years later.
