ACHIM DUCHOW
Achim Duchow was a German painter, visual artist and photographer born in Otterndorf in 1948. From 1971 to 1977 he studied at the HFBK, an art school in Hamburg and since then he has haunted the art world like an intangible ghost with his multimedia approach.
His approach has always been quite political or social, always aiming at rather ironic representations. He relies on various media, plays with different structures and mixes complementary colors that come together in a work.
As a photographer, his work focuses on a rather documentary approach, as shown by his images in Japan. Indeed, he spent almost three years there between 1979 and 1981, where he settled first in Tokyo, then in Osaka. There, he photographed life in the two largest cities of Japan and immersed himself in some of their most famous subcultures, such as the yakuza and the bosozoku. The experience and confrontation with Asia and especially with Japanese culture would accompany him throughout his life, and would make him return several times until his premature death in 1993.
Achim Duchow has been able to exhibit at important exhibitions: at the Westfälischen Kunstverein in Münster (1973), at the Kunstverein Kiel in Amsterdam (1975), at the Sao Paulo Biennale (1975) and at the Kasseler Kunstverein (1977).
